SA National Squash Championship slams into Cape Town for third consecutive year

The City of Cape Town is a proud partner of the Growthpoint SA National Squash Championships, which makes a return to Cape Town for the third consecutive year. The premier tournament currently taking place at the V & A Waterfront runs until Saturday, 12 August 2023. Read more below:
Following a series of contests around the country, the annual showdown of South Africa’s leading squash players kicked off today at one of Cape Town’s iconic destinations, the V & A Waterfront.
The prestigious tournament runs until tomorrow, Saturday, 12 August, and sees eight of the best male and female squash players compete for top honours on the all-glass court.
For greater exposure for SA’s junior squash players, a junior event was initiated in 2021 to run simultaneously with the Senior Nationals.
The iconic glass court at the V & A Waterfront will also see the country’s best in the U15, U17 and U19 age-groups battling it out for the honours from 17 to 20 August 2023.
In the senior men’s division, defending champion Dewald van Niekerk is in the running for a hat-trick of Growthpoint squash titles.
Eastern Province’s Hayley Ward has emerged as the top seed in the senior women’s division with Alexa Pienaar at second and previous champion Milnay Louw (2017 & 2019) hot on their heels hunting for domination on the court for this year’s title.
‘Following successful events in 2021 and 2022, we are thrilled to welcome the Growthpoint SA Squash National Championships back to our beautiful city for another showdown of extraordinary talent at one of Cape Town’s iconic locations. The City’s support of the tournament forms part of its efforts to continue elevating the status of squash in our country, provide an opportunity for players to showcase their skill and ensure the sport continues thriving on an international level,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.
As part of Squash SA’s commitment to the development of the sport, a number of local children will visit the glass court and learn the fundamentals of the game during interactive sessions with South African professional squash player, Siyoli Waters.
